Biography
Born May 28, 1943, in Yanan City, China, Li Yansheng is a senator of the National Committee of Chinese Political Consultative Conference, Deputy Director of Arts Committee of Chinese Painting Research Institute under the Ministry of Culture, a painter of first class at state level, member of Arts Committee of Chinese Painting of the National Committee of Chinese Artists Association. He also receives special subsidies issued by the State Council for the experts.

  Li Yansheng was a student of a number of great masters such as Guan Shan Yue, Pan Tian Shou, Jiang Zhao He, Ye Qian Yu, Li Ke Ran and Huang Zhou. From 1956 to 1980, he had studied and graduated from the Subsidiary High School of Guangzhou Fine Art Institute, Chinese Painting Department of Zhejiang Fine Art Institute and the master program of Chinese Painting at the Chinese Fine Art Institute. Since 1981, he has been a professional painter at Chinese Painting Research Institute. From 1987-1995, he also joined Master Huang Zhou to build Yan Huang Art Museum and has been appointed the Secretary General of Yan Huang Art Museum accordingly as one of the founders of the museum. Since 2003, he was selected as Deputy Director of Arts Committee of Chinese Painting Research Institute under the Ministry of Culture.

  Li Yansheng, talented in figure paintings with freehand brushwork, is also distinguished at traditional Chinese paintings of birds, animals, plants and landscapes, especially at paintings of deer. For numerous times his work have been exhibited in China and many other countries, such as Japan, France, the United States and Singapore. In 1985 his exhibit "Integrity Temperament" was held in Chinese Art Museum, in which he has received warm praise from public. Ms Deng Yingchao, the President of Chinese People's Congress has written "the Spirit of Chinese" as inscription for him. Li Yansheng has been awarded plenty of prizes. One of his works, "The Spirits of Mountains and Rivers" (65m x 2.8m) exhibited in the center hall of Chinese Revolutionary Museum in 1997, was highly commended as "extraordinary work in the history of Chinese figure paintings" and "invaluable art treasure". Part of this scroll has won the silver prize in Chinese Art Grand Exhibition held by the Ministry of Culture. In the summary report of the 7th national representatives' conference under Culture Association of China, Dec. 19, 2001, "The Spirits of Mountains and Rivers" has been described as a remarkable work, which has marked the new era of creative ways of implications within the modern art.

  Li Yansheng's paintings have been chosen by State governors as precious gifts for foreign counterparts. French President Jacques Chirac regarded Li as "a great modern artist with extraordinary talents". Mr. Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, remarked that his works are conceived very exquisitely. President Jacques and Mr. Annan have respectively written in person to Li Yansheng with appreciation and sincere appraisal to his works. His works are displayed in the meeting rooms of State Council, the Oversea Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, former Premier Zhou Enlai's parlor and the Chinese Embassy in France, etc.

  Li has several albums published, including Integrity and Temperament - a Series of Grand Figures, Collections of Yansheng Li's Paintings, and Spirits of Mountains and Rivers, etc.
